Start a petition

Anyone in Newfoundland and Labrador can propose a petition for this site. Send the four things below to the organisers (details on any of our paper petitions, or open an issue on the source repository). Petitions are reviewed before they go live so that every one on this site meets the same standard; that protects your petition as much as the site.

What to send

1. The problem, in facts you can stand behind. Dates, places, what happened, who you have already asked for help. Describe what people experienced (“residents report fumes entering their homes”), not conclusions you cannot prove (“the plant is poisoning us”). If a petition makes a factual claim about a named company or person, the organiser must be able to back it up.
2. Who should receive it, and the ask for each. A town council, the House of Assembly, a minister, a regulator. Each has its own format. We help with the wording.
3. Who you are. A named organiser with a contact email. Groups are welcome; name one person.
4. Where signers should come from. The whole province is always welcome. Name the local communities most affected so the count can show them separately.

The rules we apply

• House of Assembly petitions must follow the House’s form: the reasons, the prayer (“We, the undersigned, call upon the House of Assembly to urge the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to …”), and the public-disclosure statement on every page. The House accepts original handwritten signatures only. Any MHA may present a petition and none is obliged to. This site prints House-format pages for ink signatures; the online list is for councils and for organising.
• Town council petitions have no fixed form in NL. Councils list “petitions” on their agendas and record them in the minutes. A list with confirmed names and civic addresses carries weight.
• Wording. Respectful, factual, specific. No personal attacks. No claims about a company’s conduct that the organiser cannot support with records.
• Honesty about effect. No petition is legally binding. Every petition page says so.
