About Taking Action NL

Taking Action NL is a free platform for residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to organise petitions and deliver them to the bodies that can act: town councils, the House of Assembly, ministers and regulators.

It began with one street in Conception Bay South, where neighbours reported fumes entering their homes from a manufacturing facility and could not get an answer from anyone. The tools a resident needs to be heard are simple: a clear ask, a record of who supports it, and the right format for the body that receives it. This site provides them.

What we believe

• Privacy first. People should be able to act together without paying anyone or handing their data to a company overseas. This site collects the minimum a petition needs, shows the public only a count, never sells or shares data, and removes anyone who asks. The code is open so anyone can check that is true.
• A petition should be honest about what it is. It asks. It does not order. Its power is the number of people behind it and the record it creates.
• The rules for being heard should be written down where everyone can read them. Ours are on the start a petition page.

Who runs it

This instance is run by residents of Conception Bay South. The organisers’ contact details are given on each paper petition and at signing locations rather than published here, to keep personal information off the open internet. It is not affiliated with any government, town, company or political party.

Open source

The platform is open source. Anyone can fork it, connect their own database, and run their own instance for their own community. Improvements are welcome.
