Privacy

This site is privacy first. It exists so residents can organise without handing their personal information to an advertising business or a data broker. We collect the least a petition needs, we show the public only a count, we never sell or share what you give us, and we remove anyone who asks. The code is open source, so anyone can check that these words match what the site does.

Plain language, because that is the point.

What we collect when you sign

Your name, street address, community, province, postal code and phone number if you give them, email, the signature you draw, the date and time, and which boxes you ticked. We also keep a shortened record of your browser and a hashed form of your network address to detect duplicate or automated entries. Nothing else.

Why

To deliver the petition to the bodies it names, to confirm each signature belongs to a real person who chose to sign, and, only if you tick the box, to send you occasional updates about that petition.

Who sees it

• The organiser of the petition you signed.
• The body the petition is delivered to. A petition tabled in the House of Assembly becomes a public document of the House, and the name and address of every signer is available to the public. A petition delivered to a town council is a town record.
• Nobody else. We do not sell, rent or share your information, and we never use it for any commercial purpose.

Updates and unsubscribing

Update emails are sent only if you ticked the box. Every one has an unsubscribe line. You can also email the organiser.

Removal

Reply to your confirmation email, or ask at the signing location, and you will be removed. We remove your signature from the online list. We cannot remove a name from a petition already delivered on paper.

Where the data lives

In a database controlled by the organiser of this instance, hosted by Supabase. The website itself is static and stores nothing about you beyond what your browser keeps.

Law

This is a non-commercial, resident-run site. Canada’s private-sector privacy law (PIPEDA) applies to commercial activity; we follow its principles anyway. Public bodies that receive petitions are governed by Newfoundland and Labrador’s Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015.
